Place Plumereau
Affectionately nicknamed Plum’ by the locals, Place Plumereau is the beating heart of Old Tours. Its tall 15th- and 16th-century timber-framed houses frame an entirely pedestrian square, lined with unbroken terraces. People meet from aperitif time onward, share a drink in the sun, and then stay… because it is very hard to leave. The atmosphere is cheerful, studenty and talkative.
The lanes of Old Tours
Around the square, a web of medieval lanes waits to be explored. Rue du Grand-Marché lines up shops and food addresses, Place Foire-le-Roi hides its Renaissance mansion, and the Hôtel Goüin is itself a little architectural jewel to visit. Walking hand in hand through this almost unreal setting is the kind of date you replay later in your head, and that calls for a second one.
Rue Colbert and city-centre shops
A little further east, Rue Colbert and its old signs lead toward the cathedral. Small shops, wine merchants and restaurants follow one another, perfect for finding a spot while wandering together. On Lyad, members from Tours share their favourite bistros; it is up to you to find someone to step inside and order from the Loire wine list with.
